Did You Hear The One About....
Did You Hear The One About The Murder Defendant and the...California Death Penalty
Unlike Texas and Florida, California has become the butt of a few jokes in regard to it's death penalty rate. This week in the City of Norwalk, CA, a jury found a reputed gang member guilty of killing a Los Angeles Sheriffs Deputy and sentenced him to death. Well, being that this is the state of California, the defendant did something that other juries may have seen lately, when the verdict of guilt and death is in the same sentence. He laughed. Now if this doesn't tell you about the state of the death penalty in California, I don't what to tell you. When you have a defendant sit stoically all through the trial and receive a guilty verdict, laugh! damn either he's a cool blooded killer or the punch line of the death penalty was that funny. To be honest, I can't blame him, Hell I think the death penalty in this state is joke. And when some condemned killer is finally up for the needle, some twenty or twenty five years after the verdict, the death penalty process goes from joke to circus atmosphere. Somehow the argument that the family and the state should just let the person live makes sense. Hell, he or she has been on the state's dime for that long, why the hell not. So when this defendant's number comes up in 2027 or 2030, I"m sure he'll still be laughing but this time he'll be laughing at the State trying to kill him and the media putting the victim's family on his guilty trip.
