Sports Takes: [The] Sarge Report

[The] Sarge Report formerly known as [The] Skipper Report

Atten!! Hua!! This is the "Sarge" speaking and yeah it's the same sarge formerly known as the "Skipper." But since Major Minor (a co-worker) has a dog named Skipper, I can't be confused with a four legged creature....So now, hear this!! all hands on deck and check out the new "Sarge Report." (note: how come the Major didn't name his dog "*Spot"? that way we could have changed his nickname to "Cal." He even has a jingle, check it out:

Announcer: Here's John "*Cal" Minor and his dog spot!!!

Cal Minor: Well howdy folks, come on down to my office where I got some interesting sports talk and memorabilia. For instance, I got this old tin can of chew that was used by the great Josh Gibson and just in I got two bats signed by Reggie Jackson. Come on down to my office, it's located one office down left of the "exit" sign in Los Angeles, City Hall East, Seventh floor!!

Jingle: "When you need a sports memory go see Cal" "When you need sports trivia go see Cal"

Cal: I'll run to Coach's office and get the answer!"
Go see Cal - Go see Cal!

Alright, Alright.....At ease.

First, I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving and enjoyed sharing the day with family or friends. The sarge spent it with friends and family and enjoyed a good sports weekend of pro football, college football and basketball. So lets get this inspection started! ahem...Squad! Atten!!! hua!!

NFL:

Let me start with the Thursday games, The NFL has got to be giddy over its scheduling this year and the teams that are playing some serious football. For instance, who beside Packer fan had the packers being 10-1 this season. And who would have thought my beloved Cowboys would be 10-1 under Wade Phillips...Not me...but they are and on Thursday somebody's one has got to go. Both the Cowboys and Packers made easy work of their Thursday opponents and sent messages to one another. Sarge Pick. Cowboys of course. +5

UPDATE: Since the game is on the NFL channel about 60% of the country will not see the game. I assume congress will be holding hearings with DIRECTV and the NFL wanting to know the reason why a huge portion of their constituency can't see the game...The Sarge's reply, drop cable and get DIRECTV....or miss games...Now drop and gimme 10!!! Prrrry Vit!!

On a sad note, I woke up Tuesday morning not only to find I had a flat tire, but that Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor had passed away from a gun shot wound to the leg. Now if you listen to a lot of sports radio or if you read the story in regard to Taylor, you should have noticed the "Sean Taylor died from his gun shot wounds this morning..Taylor was the Redskins fifth round pick in 2004. Taylor would be remembered for his off the field and on the field conduct." Look the man was shot in his home!! he wasn't on the streets leaving some gang fight at a strip club! He was shot where his daughter and his fiancee' laid their heads. Look the man started his career on rocky ground, but from all accounts he grew up when he realized he had a child and a loving woman who he was going to marry. The team made him team captain and oh by the way he studied more and learned the game, thus making him the league leader in interceptions this year!!. No one said that...

Patriot fans were given a scare yesterday, when the McNabb-less eagles almost punked them at home. The patriots remain undefeated and clinched its division. I'm not sold on them until I see four zeroes on the clock at the end of the fourth quarter in the Super Bowl. Of course with them on top...Last week Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock wrote that the real MVP of the Patriots and the league is Randy Moss. Hell, I agree. Brady would not be doing what he's doing without him....If the writers screw this up, I won't be surprised.

San Diego fans are luke-warm these days, they're not happy with their coach and they see Bum's son doing well in Dallas at 10-1, while they are two games above .500. They're happy they are in first, but the division they play in...come on lets face it, they suck...The Raiders are one game better than they were last year and! speaking of the Raiders, they can feel free to let Demarcus Russell play so raider fan can get a glimpse of what they're future has in store for them..Or they can continue looking at Tennessee and get the ideal. The only difference is that Russell may be the better passer than Young...Hey Raiders! let the rook play!!

I mentioned that the Raiders got their third win and first division win since 2003 and we can thank Herm Edwards for it. Hey Edwards, what happen to "we play to win the game?" The play calling for that last drive looked like you were playing for something else...get it together..

I wonder if Arthur Blank misses Michael Vick. the NFL network does, it was absolutely horrible watching the Colts v. Falcons....so I didn't...instead I watched...

(Quick note: and who is going to watch tonights game? besides Steeler fan. ESPN should exercise a flex schedule and pull that game for a more competitive one)

Update: Not only was the Steeler/Dolphin game ugly, but it was ugly and props to Ricky Williams for ending his season one day into starting his season. This time it wasn't the blow that ended it, it was a blow from a steeler defender's cleat that did it...Memo to Steeler brass, mix in some turf! I appreciate a good slippin' and slidin' mud field like anyone else, but realize that millions upon millions of dollars out there....

College Football:

Props to the USC Trojans for going into Sun Devil stadium and sending Arizona St. to AP/Coaches/BCS poll hell. The Trojans wore down Arizona State and now the table is set for them to play in the Rose Bowl against Ohio State.

Oh!! Les!!! Last week a few of us were bringing up situations in the BCS, and I know I mentioned that LSU can be done in by Arkansas...Well, they were...Props to coach Houston Nutt and his Razorback team for going into the Tiger Stadium and crushing Les Miles' dream of playing for a national title.... Hey Les, wanna know the answer to your question, in whose better, the Pac 10 or the SEC? Schedule a Pac 10 team, not named Stanford, Arizona, Washington State, Washington and oh hell UCLA and CAL. Looks like you're playing for Oranges.

Mizzou and Kansas Game was off the chain (a great game or good) on Saturday night. Mizzou jumped on Kansas early and rocked them defensively in the first half. But give credit to Kansas, they showed a lot of heart, but came up short. The sarge is not upset about their ranking in the BCS. They deserve a good BCS bowl game.

I was going to let this issue slide in regard to Karl Dorrell's comments in a L.A. Times article written by Kurt Streeter, but I can't. This season I was and still calling for the firing of Dorrell for coaching inconsistent games. I know he went 10 and 2 last year and he beat USC. But he also turned around and lost to Florida State, a bad Florida State team in a bowl game. Inconsistent. Now I am aware of the number of black college head coaches, but so far there is only one coach that can use race as the possibility for his ousting. And that's Ty Willingham. As you all know, Willingham was let go Notre Dame way short of completing his fifth season. After having a good, above average and average seasons at Notre Dame. The school hires Weis and he has a good, average and way below average seasons at ND and he gets an extension. Willingham's reaction to his termination? "This is what happens when you don't win enough games." Not this is bullbleep they fired me because I'm black and I'm coaching on uneven ground..No! we can save that last statement for Karl Dorrell who disappointedly played the race card..No! played "Race Softball" because Streeter tossed him an underhand slow pitch softball and Karl hit it in the foul ball section, because his comments were foul!...

How dare you Karl use race as an issue for your coaching inconsistencies. And this is not your first time at bat in playing "race softball." because you were quoted as saying when asked:

TJ Simers: "Would this feeling you have that you must do more than anyone else to be successful be any different if you were not an African American?"

Dorrell: "No, it wouldn't," "I've just always felt that I needed to do more to get where I am."

Like what?! Karl if you are talking about game preparation...yeah, if you are talking about hiring assistant coaches with sketchy backgrounds...yeah! what about players?! and what about this glaring feature, Karl? WIN SOME GAMES AND BEAT TEAMS YOU SHOULD BEAT!! with your 1st or 2nd string quarterbacks. How about having your third string quarterback up on the plays instead of having him moth balled with the b-team. 12 yards passing in a half against a totally different Oregon team...Karl? That type of play is a good reason to tell you to prepare a statement about your firing. Not your race. Cause you know what..You'll get another gig somewhere else...believe that..

I'm sorry squad for the long diatribe, but in closing. Dodger fan where are the big free agents? Oh! one of them is playing for Los Angeles....of Anaheim....I hope Torre isn't it...

Footnote: The "spot" and "Cal" reference refers to a Southern California icon, Cal Worthington, a car salesman.
